ACTIVITIES IN JULY 2011 - Getting to know the city of Buenos Aires in a different fashion.
During the month of July EleBaires undertook a variety of activities. We went on walking tours around several of the neighbourhoods of the city, visited museums, attended a cooking class where we prepared empanadas, played football and rode around the city on bike tours.
During one of the walking tours we went to Barrio Chino (Buenos Aires own China town). We were a group of 5 and commenced our excursion of this interesting little neighbourhood that the city had for a few years now. Initially we took the subway (el Subte) Line C to Retiro from where we took a train which would drop us off at Belgrano Station – at the entry to Barrio Chino. We hadn’t even disembarked from the train when we saw the Chinese Gates that were constructed two years ago and create an imposing welcome to the neighbourhood.
Barrio Chino makes up two blocks of the neighbourhood named Belgrano and is not officially recognized as a porteño neighbourhood. Barrio Chino is not named as such because a large population of Asian people live in the area but rather because it is the commercial area where one can find everything from Chinese restaurants to Asian supermarkets. As it was midday we decided to eat in a restaurant where we tried their famous spring rolls, rice with vegetables and wok style food. All of the plates we ordered were typical Chinese dishes. After eating, we walked around the neighbourhood and then continued on to the famous lakes of Palermo – also known as “El Rosedal“. We walked and walked and walked to various places enjoying the beautiful weather that the city had put on for us that day.
On top of the walking tour we also did other activities during July. Bringing together Argentinians and students from EleBaires we organized a football (soccer) match for an afternoon and afterwards we went out and enjoyed some mate to get to know each other a little better and practise our Spanish. It’s an interesting and fun activity that allows students from the school to get to know people their own age in a different and more informal setting than a regular class.
During the month of August we are continuing undertaking a variety of activities and excursions to different places in Buenos Aires. We do these activities not only so you can get to know the city in a different way but also to allow you to practise your Spanish in a manner different to the class room with real, live porteños!
